Split-testing is a simple technique that allows you to measure a specific component of your marketing system, ad copy, or offer in real time.
Example: Most business owners have heard they should test headlines, so they measure the results of their Web site (the number of visitors, opt-ins, and sales) for a week.
Then, they change the headline, and measure the results for another week. When it's over, they add everything up and assume they'll be able to determine which one produces better results. But they can't.
Why? Because traffic patterns change.
- You may get listed in a search engine during the test, and start to receive highly targeted traffic that converts well, regardless of the headline.
- Or an affiliate may flood your site with cheap, untargeted pop-up traffic, which will make your conversion rate nearly zero, great headline or not.
That's why you never want to test based on time periods, but rather visitor counts.
You still have two versions of your sales letter, Letter A and Letter B (each one having a different headline.) But this time, you use a script or other technological advantage to show each letter alternatively to each web visitor.
So, visitor 1 would see Letter A, visitor 2 would see Letter B. Visitor 3 would see letter A, visitor 4 would see letter B and so on.

The title was appealing enough for people to download the report, which generated great feedback. We decided to test another headline to see if it made any difference.
"How to Get 1000 Subscribers in One Week!" (thinking that by shifting the focus from us (How "I" Got) to them (How TO GET), it would improve results. Right?
Wrong. The results weren't as strong, so we quickly changed the headline back to "How I Got 1000 Subscribers in One Week!"
If we had just assumed one would work better we would be losing customers but would never know.
Further tests revealed by changing the headline to "How I Got 1,124 Subscribers in One Week!" (using a more specific number) results improved!

As you continue testing, even when you make small improvements, you'll easily increase results by 10%, 20%, even 30% or more.
